Carmel is the name of a mountain ridge running toward the sea on the north-west coast of Palestine. It is named after the great Old Testament prophet, Elijah, who appeared at our Lord's transfiguration. Members of the religious order called Carmelites trace their heritage from hermits who lived on that mountain under the direction of Elijah. At the Carmelite monastery on this mountain, Christians, Jews and Mohammedans unite to honor Mar Elias.
